In response to your question about the nest....my first thought was a hummingbird's nest also. I researched that, and our hummers here (Ruby Throated) have nests the size of a walnut. This nest is definitely bigger than that.
I'll keep watching it when I visit that area again to see if I can see any birds flying to it.
